The Complete Moving Checklist for Central PA Homeowners (8 Weeks Out to Move Day)

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

A move goes smoothest when the planning starts early and nothing falls through the cracks at the end. This moving checklist is built for homeowners in the Harrisburg, Lancaster, and York areas, covering everything from booking your mover eight weeks out to the last walkthrough before you hand over the keys.

Work through it in order and adjust the timeline to fit your situation. Not every task applies to every move, but having them all in one place means nothing gets forgotten in the final stretch.

8 Weeks Before Your Move

This is the stage where the big decisions get made. The earlier you lock these in, the more flexibility you have for everything that follows.

  • Set your target move date and confirm it with your real estate agent, landlord, or closing attorney
  • Start researching and contacting moving companies. Request free in-home estimates from at least two to three companies
  • Verify any mover you consider is licensed and insured. For interstate moves, confirm their USDOT number through the FMCSA SAFER database
  • Begin a room-by-room inventory of what is coming with you and what is not
  • Start a dedicated moving folder (physical or digital) for estimates, receipts, contracts, and contact information
  • If you are moving with children, research school enrollment requirements for your new area and start the transfer process
  • Notify your employer of your new address for HR and payroll records

6 Weeks Before Your Move

With a mover identified and your date set, this window is for decisions and logistics that take time to process.

  • Book your moving company and confirm your date in writing. Peak season (May through September) books out fast, so do not wait once you have an estimate you are comfortable with
  • Begin collecting packing supplies: boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, and markers. Ask neighbors, local Facebook groups, and liquor stores for free boxes
  • Start decluttering in earnest. Every item you donate, sell, or discard is one less thing to pack, move, and unpack
  • Schedule a garage sale or list items online if you plan to sell furniture or household goods before the move
  • Notify your insurance providers (homeowner's or renter's, auto, health) of your upcoming address change
  • Contact your children's current school to request records and transfer documentation
  • Begin researching doctors, dentists, and specialists in your new area if you are relocating within or to Central PA

4 Weeks Before Your Move

A month out is when packing should begin in earnest, starting with rooms and items you use least frequently.

  • Start packing non-essential rooms first: guest bedrooms, storage areas, seasonal items, books, and decorative items
  • Label every box on the top and at least one side with the room it belongs in and a brief description of contents
  • File a change of address with the U.S. Postal Service at moversguide.usps.com. Schedule it to take effect on or after your move date
  • Notify your bank, credit card companies, and any financial institutions of your address change
  • Update your address with subscription services, Amazon, and any recurring deliveries
  • Contact your utility providers to schedule disconnection at your current address for the day after your move. Arrange connection at your new address for the day before or day of your arrival
  • Return any borrowed items and collect anything you have loaned out
  • If you are storing items with a moving company before or after your move, confirm storage dates and facility details

2 Weeks Before Your Move

The home is becoming noticeably less settled by now. Keep packing consistently and use this window to handle the practical odds and ends.

  • Continue packing room by room, leaving out only what you actively need day-to-day
  • Confirm your move date, time, and crew details with your moving company
  • Arrange care for children and pets on move day so they are comfortable and out of the path of the crew
  • Notify friends, family, and important contacts of your new address
  • Transfer or cancel local memberships: gym, library cards, clubs, and recurring local services
  • Use up or properly dispose of items movers cannot transport: flammable materials, aerosols, open food, propane tanks, and certain cleaning products
  • Confirm parking availability and truck access at both the pickup and delivery addresses

1 Week Before Your Move

The final week before your move is about finishing the packing, handling logistics, and getting yourself mentally ready for move day.

  • Pack everything except what you need for the final days: clothes, toiletries, medications, important documents, chargers, and bedding
  • Prepare an essentials box or bag that travels with you (not on the truck): medications, valuables, documents, phone chargers, snacks, a change of clothes, and anything you need immediate access to on arrival
  • Confirm the final walkthrough date and time with your real estate agent or closing attorney
  • Defrost the refrigerator and freezer and clean them out completely at least 24 hours before the move
  • Disconnect and prepare appliances per your moving company's guidance
  • Withdraw some cash for move-day tips if you plan to tip the crew
  • Confirm your new home or apartment will be ready and accessible on your move date

Move Day

Move day runs more smoothly when your role is clear from the start. Your job is to be present, available, and out of the way of the crew doing the physical work.

  • Be ready before the crew arrives. Have the home accessible, pathways clear, and any fragile or high-value items you are transporting yourself set aside and clearly marked as "not to be loaded"
  • Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, cabinet, and outdoor space before the truck leaves
  • Confirm the delivery address and your contact number with the crew lead before they depart
  • At delivery, direct the crew room by room and check items off your inventory as they come in
  • Inspect for any damage before the crew leaves and note it on any paperwork you sign
  • Tip the crew based on the quality of service. A fair range for a full-day local move is $20 to $50 per mover
  • Do a final check of your previous address: keys returned, nothing left behind, utilities confirmed off

After the Move: First Week in Your New Home

The boxes are in. Here is what to handle in the first few days.

  • Confirm utilities are active and functioning at the new address
  • Locate your circuit breaker, water shut-off valve, and HVAC controls
  • Change the locks or rekey the doors if you are moving into a previously occupied home
  • Update your driver's license and vehicle registration with your new Pennsylvania address within 60 days of the move
  • Register to vote at your new address if you have moved to a new county or municipality
  • Introduce yourself to neighbors and locate the nearest grocery, pharmacy, and urgent care
